caramel apple treat

27 09 2010

T1 has to take a treat to her volleyball team periodically.  She wanted something super special so we decided to make caramel apples.  We dipped them in blue and silver sprinkles and then coated them with a white chocolate glaze.  They were a hit!

we used the caramel bits and they were very easy to work with

they weren't lumpy, not sure why it looks like they were

New pillow from an old pillow

26 09 2010

What do you do with a flat king size bed pillow? You push the stuffing down, sew down the middle, cut off the excess, make a cover for it, and have a new pillow for your sofa. Of course, I didn’t take a picture of the before pillow or the process.  When inspiration hits, I sometimes forget that part.  I think the pillow turned out super cute and I didn’t have to throw away a useless king sized bed pillow.  Here’s the thing, my kids each want one for their beds now so I may take the advice from a blog I saw awhile back (I can’t find it again to give them credit) and cut a new one in half.

Tree for T1

21 09 2010

More decorating in T1’s room.  She really liked the tree on the wall in Pottery Barn Teen that matched the bedspread set we splurged on during the move.  I bought some fabric at JoAnn’s using a coupon and made a tree.  We attached it using starch.  I still have some leaves to add and some accessories (I have an owl dry erase board floating around in my mind), but it turned out pretty cute.  I think I may add some additional branches to stretch further to the left of her wall…

Oragnization for spices

20 09 2010

This was my husband’s super great idea in our last house and I moved it with us.  I need to have him cut filler pieces (since my cabinet is a little bigger here) but the idea is still great.  He took 2 x 4’s and ripped a few to make them 2 x 2’s and then we stacked the combination to make stair steps.  They are the perfect size for the little spices.

dry erase boards

I see these all over blog land AND had a need for a weekly calendar. To the thrift store I went and came up with two great frames, one for the weekly calendar and one for T2’s room. I don’t have a cutting machine, so I used permanent marker on the calendar.  When I do get a cutting machine (hopefully soon) I can use alcohol to remove the permanent marker.

like the still unpacked stuff in the garage...basement still in progress

I couldn’t get an angle where the flash didn’t glare or the sun didn’t glare so it looks better in real life than in this photo.  Vinyl letters will help (hint, hint family)

a dresser for T3

4 09 2010

The new house has nice walk in closets, but much less floor space.  She now has to store her toys in the closet as well as her clothes and there isn’t quite enough room.  She has always had shelves and hanging space with her bed drawers sufficing for what needed to be stored. Nana had a dresser she was willing to give us.  With some elbow grease stripping, sanding and painting, T3 has a very usable dresser now.  The knobs are from Hobby Lobby and the drawer liners (pic coming soon) will be freezer paper and used dryer sheets, because the drawers are old and kinda smell old.

The dresser had at least 3 layers of paint on it, one with a crackle finish. I used citrus strip and had to use and entire container, but it worked well.

She picked out the knobs, the ones on the bottom matching the knobs we got for her bedside table.  You can see some artwork still on the floor…her bedroom isn’t finished either.  I want soooo bad the show you the room, so maybe this long weekend will be enough time.
